Rushton tussle at Oldfield Fell Race 20 July 2008
Once again the Oldfield Fell Race (5.5ms 550') proved that there is definitely a different world that is 'Haworth and beyond' . Everyone set off from Bingley in blue sky, gentle breeze, vests and shorts to be met at the Grouse by a bracing wind and thoughts of shelter, long sleeves and gloves - especially for Jenny Vesey. A good turnout from Bingley saw 11 seniors and 12 juniors on the start lines. The needle match here was the tussle over the Rushton Shield with the two current top place holders Lisa Spencer and Stephen Firth both vying to get that extra race in. Lisa Spencer was at a distant wedding on the Saturday so maybe wouldn't make it and Stephen Firth had cricket commitments on the Sunday which clashed. In the event Lisa made an early start to get back and Stephen squeezed it in before dashing off to the cricket.
The run itself wasn't without incident - Harry Atkinson got caught in a 'fence man-trap' that wrapped first one foot and then the other in fencing wire (Sorry Harry - couldn't stop to help. I had a race on hand with a lady on my heels - Becky), and a fair group of runners did an extra loop when they missed a stile at the farm - those runners in front must know where they are going mustn't they! The Bingley ladies featured in the prizes with bottles of wine coming home with Becky Weight (3rd F) and Jenny Vesey (2nd FV). The Junior races which are part of the Ken Smith Junior Fell Championship set off just after the senior race along part of the same route. Bingley juniors made a clean sweep with winners in the U12 (Vincent Weight (M) & H Crossfield (F)), U14 (Owen Wheelan & Rebecca Holmes) and U16 (J Crossfield (M)). Well done to everyone, even the weather, which had warmed up by the end letting us sit at the tables outside the pub in relatively sunny comfort.
