PECO Cross-Country Challenge Races for 8 to 16 year olds
This is just an info sheet to the clubs within the Bradford Athletics Network whose juniors are being allowed to compete in this League this season. Races will count towards the Bingley Harriers Junior Cross Country Championships.
Last year there were 11-16 junior races at the PECO Cross-Country League for the first time. There were not many runners and most were from Ilkley, however this year it has been offered to a lot more clubs with juniors so there will be more competition. The PECO League Challenge races are a great stepping stone from School to Club competition as it is not as high level as the Complete Runner League. The Challenge races are for everyone regardless of ability and we would like clubs to encourage as many of their youngsters to compete as possible. Some of the clubs within the PECO League do not have official junior sections. However we wish to encourage participation, so a son/daughter or grandchild is eligible to run under the name of the club of their parent/grandparent.
You do not need to register beforehand, just turn up on the day, register, pay your £1 and run. As you finish you will be handed a numbered tally. Ilkley Harriers have offered to run the junior finish and do the results at each of the PECO races this season, so a member of the club (usually me) will be at the finish to collect in your tally and record your name. You should wear club vests if you have them, but any coloured T-shirt will be fine if not. There is a 5 mile (approx) senior race at 11.00am where parents may run as guests if they wish (provided that they are members of a UKA-affiliated running club). Refreshments are available for everyone after the senior race, unless otherwise stated in the race information.
It is run like a league so at the end there are age category prizes for U9, U11, U13, U15 and U17 (boys and girls).

Junior Cross Country Report 2010-11
We are delighted with the enthusiasm shown by the increasing numbers turning up for our Tuesday evening sessions, and there are definite signs that we are making progress in strengthening the Junior side of the Club. This is yet to translate into team success in competitions such as the West Yorkshire League, but at least we are competing more regularly and our prospects for the coming season look brighter than in recent years.
We have been building up from the bottom, with our youngest runners gaining valuable racing experience. The U11s have been particularly successful, both in the PECO League and in the large number of fell races that they have entered, and it is no surprise that three out of our four main Trophy winners come from this age-group. Many of them will be U13s in the coming season, though we have enough U11s to take their place, and we shall be hoping for a big improvement in our team results in the various Championships.
On an individual basis, there have been some fantastic performances, with the highlight being Emile Cairess’s 20th place in the National, although all of those listed in the awards below, and a good number of others, have all made notable contributions.
Team success must be our priority, however, and it is vital that we keep as many as possible of those who run on Tuesdays in the fold, so that they become members, and go on to represent the Club in the most important races : we want runners in Bingley vests to begin dominating the starting lines.
Achieving success requires a great deal of commitment from many people, and first of all I would like to thank the parents for all their support and encouragement, with particular mention for those who regularly turn up and help out on Tuesdays: their contribution is much appreciated.
Finally, I cannot conclude this report without expressing my thanks to Graham Smith and David Potter for all their advice, help and wholehearted commitment: it’s a pleasure and a privilege “working” with them.
Thanks to Graham and David, training this year has continued throughout the summer, and most of our youngsters should be fitter than usual at the start of the new season: we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible, and particularly in races!
